We understand that quitting smoking may be one of the biggest challenges you will ever face. But remember it is worth it!
If you have used the recent National No Smoking Day to help you give up you may by now be experiencing some weakening of your willpower. Don’t give up giving up! Even if you have had the odd cigarette since giving up it is important to keep strong and motivated to push on through those cravings – you can still do it.
For some, it may have seemed easy at first but the longer you go on the more occasions you will encounter that will make you want to smoke. This may be spending time with friends who smoke, drinking alcohol, or experiencing stressful situations where you would normally have reached for the packet.
If possible it is great to give up at the same time as your friends so that you can all encourage each other. If your friends are not ready to give up themselves they should respect your choice and support you while you go through this. But you are not alone! Your GP can help you to work out the best approach to help you succeed.
If it’s feeling too much to take on, keep in mind the benefits of quitting, which are dramatic, at any age, and they begin almost immediately.
Don’t be discouraged though if you have tried to give up and not been successful. Most smokers make repeated quit attempts before finally achieving long-term abstinence. If you have tried before and it didn’t work out, don’t worry. You haven’t failed!
This is in no way predictive of future success, so don’t be too hard on yourself. Keep in mind that quitting smoking is like learning to ride a bicycle. You may fall off but the important thing is getting back up again. That’s how we learn, and the same logic applies to quitting smoking.
Our doctors and nurses at Pinches would be delighted to talk you through the various quitting strategies and work with you to tailor a plan to suit your individual circumstances and wider health needs. Just a little extra planning and support prior to and during the next attempt may make all the difference.
